If you’re finding it difficult to deal with depression in college or high school, if you think you’re the unfortunate one, and, worse, if you feel life is not worth living, then watch this video. Bit longish (nearly 15 minutes), but worth watching.

Nick Vujicic was born with tetra-Amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized with absence of all four limbs. As a child, he was teased and mocked at. He thought he had no future, no opportunity, and no hope. And he nearly attempted suicide at the age of ten.

Today, he is a sought-after speaker (30,000 standing invitations at the time of this talk), has addressed millions in 60+ countries, has met the who’s who, runs a non-profit and a for-profit venture, has written two books, has done a music video, has acted in a short film with an award winning performance, and has a spouse and a child.

And he has no limbs.

None of four.

Stress, anxiety, and depression are more commonplace in college and school campuses than a decade back, and are only accelerating.

And yes, it’s not just college but high-school students too feel stressed, confused, depressed when dealing with failures and rising expectations of people around. Some take the extreme step. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in people in 15-24 year age group in U.S.

Few years down the road, the reasons which triggered these responses won’t even be relevant, let alone matter, to most of them. Yet some of them won’t be there in this world because they lost hope easily and that too for trivial reasons such as academic pressure and bullying.

Some of Nick’s quotes tell us why he reached where he is, and these can change your life too:

It’s a lie to think you’re not good enough. It’s a lie to think you’re not worth anything.

I was never crippled until I lost hope.

Focus on your dream and do everything in your power! You have the power to change your life circumstances.

You need not look further than his quotes to draw inspiration if you’re in the middle of rough times.

If Nick can fight hopelessness, and dream big, you certainly can.

He is a busy traveler and he carries a shoe with him. When asked why, he says, “Who knows the Almighty might get pleased to gift what He kept back from me in the beginning – my legs.”

That’s hope.
